Yesterday was soccer practice.  The "soccer sisters" were roller blading, biking, etc. and the moms and dads were sitting around the edges of the field talking and watching.  We noticed some monkeys approaching but honestly weren't paying them a lot of attention.  At first there were 3...then 6...and then they were stalking our backpacks!  By the time we realized what they were doing, they had surrounded us and were spread out for the attack.  We managed to get the boys backpacks and move them to safety by our benches, but while we were doing that, we were attacked from behind and one made off with a water jug.  He climbed the tree with it, unscrewed the top, drank what he wanted, poured the rest out, then threw the empty jug back at us.  Guess that's a problem we won't have in the States at a soccer practice.

In other news...Bethany now has glasses...or she will as soon as they are made.  We went to the eye doc today and yep, one eye is off; the other is fine -which probably makes it more noticeable to her.  Glasses could probably have waited a little while, but we want to make sure she doesn't miss anything on the trip on the way home....  And I don't think she would pass a drivers license eye test ... yeah, gotta do that too when we get to North Carolina ... or she could just be like Brandon ...

I know we are in for some culture shock when we move "home"...but after today, I think it's going to be worse than I thought!  We got a movie to watch this afternoon (nice, lazy Sunday afternoon activity) - Runaway Jury.  Well...Rick had to stop it 3 times in the first 5 minutes to re-explain who the characters were!  The opening credits hadn't even finished rolling yet!  The kids couldn't keep who was who straight - there were all white men wearing suits.  We determined that if they were Asian we could remember who was who a little better!  Caucasian men all look alike!

I'm so ready for my own van... I went to tea with some friends.  I got a taxi and was going by Singapore Chinese Girls’ School to pick up Linda and then we were meeting the others at a hotel tea room.  It was pouring buckets.  The taxi driver SAID he knew where I wanted him to go.  Hummm….I stupidly sat back and let him go…not paying a lot of attention until I saw the entrance of the school as we flew past it.  I said, “ummm…Uncle, you missed the entrance.”  He said that was ok, he would just go in the next one.  I’m thinking, there’s not a “next one”…it’s an exit.  Which he quickly discovered.  So he decided he could just back up!!  Excuse me!!!  Dunearn Road is a BUSY road!!!  And he chose to back up in front of a bus stop in driving rain!!  At this point, I said, “ummmm, Uncle, this is a bus stop, AND THAT’S A BUS COMING AT US!!!”  Finally he listened and decided that wasn’t a good idea.  So he proceeded to just “go around the block”.  Well, that’s a little easier said than done.  We ended up on the highway going away from the school.  Ok…this is going to be a long story so I’ll skip to the end…He ended up missing the entrance a SECOND time and we ended up on the highway THREE times and finally ended up at the “back entrance” of the school - which looked not quite right to me.  There was a problem: the school I wanted to be at doesn’t have a “back entrance”.  He had me at the wrong school!!!  This was when I saw another taxi driver letting someone out, so I snagged the chance and made my escape.  No, I didn’t pay the guy!!  By this time, we had been driving in circles for 35 additional minutes, and the fare had doubled what it should have been, and I STILL wasn’t where I wanted to be!  The first driver gave up and let me loose…the second driver just laughed….I finally made it to Linda who was beside herself…couldn’t believe that first guy was allowed to drive.  Me either.  I'm so ready for my van...then I can get lost all by myself.

Hey guys...

Yes, Steph, I do still remember how to xanga...and I have enjoyed reading everyone's posts everyday...but the kids have totally disappeared from the realm of xanga...so you are stuck with me.

I've decided I'm going to post "blessings" in an effort to keep my sanity during this move.  There's already been several...well, many...some every day stuff...and some stuff related to the move.  Like: lunch with friends yesterday...my Singapore friends.  One is already planning a trip to see us in December or so - how cool is that!  I'm so excited.  I think another is coming next summer 2007.  The other is a missionary with Singapore Youth for Christ...so her budget is a little limited...but she's thinking about it .  Soccer is a blessing...the boys play, the girls hang out with the "soccer sisters" and I get to talk with an American mom!  cool...Ginger's so neat.  I'm going to miss her and our talks on Monday afternoons.  Another humongous blessing is ... a VAN ... oh man...still can't believe it.  Every time we start to panic about how the paycheck is going to stretch far enough...well, Rick doesn't panic...so maybe it's just me...anyhow...God understands...and He drops huge presents in our laps...the size of a VAN!  Wow...check that one off the "to do" list for when we get to North Carolina!  Another blessing...Bethany and Kirk playing praise music on the violin and guitar...hang on a second...gotta go listen....okay, I'm back...yep, that's cool too.  I'm looking forward to the future blessings too...like a house...boy, I'm ready...especially after a day like today...they are rennovating the store right below our flat...jackhammers and drills all day today.  My feet are still vibrating.

Oh, Steph, I found the hidden Mickey under the coaster.  Yep, just the other day.  Kids about had a fit...said I needed to tell you I finally found it.  Hey, it's only been there 6 months.  Still haven't found the other one...

More later...

Okay, everyone here has already received our report from my and Bethany's trip to the Philippines so I don't need to post that here.  It was an unforgettable trip.  Now, Bethany and I are both sick!! - from exhaustion I'm sure.  But school must go on!!...so we are stumbling along this week.  We managed to get to our English classes yesterday.  That's always so cool.  The ladies are so eager to learn.  I told Rick I think I've figured out what I want to do when I grow up   :  teach ESL or adult literacy.  Bethany's going to start tutoring one lady one-on-one who is progressing learning to SPEAK English, but she can't read or write.  So we are breaking out the old ABEKA K-5 reading curriculum and seeing how far we can get with that.  I'm sure there's some more official way you are "supposed" to do this, but we are flying by the seat of our pants at the moment and that's the material we have on hand.

Rick leaves next week for Cambodia...so pray he doesn't get our disease!  Singapore "takes your temperature" via the little heat sensor thing (screening for SARS or Bird Flu or whatever) when you come in to the country so he may not get back home if he gets sick!!

I'm going to end this now and go crash on the couch and see if I can stay awake until LOST (the season behind you) comes on.  (Thanks, Janet, if you are still taping it for us

Cathy
